Depending on whether you buy your electric car new or used, prices can vary hugely. On the one hand, you could buy a used model for around £11,000 and, on the other hand, you could purchase a new Mercedes model for upwards of £170,000.
Most electric cars take between 30 minutes and 2 hours to fully charge, but some can take as long as 48 hours. Times vary depending on the size of the battery, the speed of the charging point being used, and how many miles have been driven since the last charge.
Even though most manufacturers have warranties of 8 years or 100,000 miles, the average lifespan of electric vehicle batteries is between 15 and 20 years, and in some cases, they can cover over 150,000 miles.
How far cars can travel on a single charge depends on the model and the size of the battery. Whilst some Tesla and Mercedes models have ranges of over 600 miles, the Smart EQ ForTwo has roughly an 80 mile range. All in all, the average electric car usually has a range of between 100 and 300 miles.

What is an electric car (EV)?
Electric vehicles (EVs) are 100% electric. They don’t contain a petrol or diesel engine, and since they don’t burn any fuel they produce zero emissions. Just like a phone or other device, they are plugged into a power source and recharged when the battery becomes low. To learn more about electric vehicles, visit our Electric Vehicle Hub.
Are EVs right for me?
If you’re looking to reduce your emissions and want an easier driving experience, an electric car will be perfect for you. Test drives can be a helpful way to decide, giving you a better feel for EVs and how one fits into your lifestyle. It’s especially recommended if you haven’t driven one before.
How much do EVs cost?
Prices for electric cars vary depending on the make and model you want, ranging from £20,000 - £60,000 and more. With such a wide range of models available, there’s sure to be something that meets your needs and budget. Of course, used electric cars are a great way to access the car you want at a lower price point.
How far can an EV travel on a single charge?
Again, this will depend on the specific model. Ranges tend to be between 200 – 300 miles. However, thanks to advanced battery technology, some models now offer 400 and more. Whichever EV you choose, you needn’t worry about range with over 61,232 public charging points available.
How long does it take to charge an EV?
This depends on the size of the battery and the speed of the charger. Home charging is typically slower, with most outlets offering between 2.3-7kWs of power. These will take anywhere between 5 – 11 hours for a full charge, obviously better for overnight charging.
Rapid DC charging points offer a much faster way to charge your EV. These offer anything from 25-150kW of power and can provide up to an 80% charge in around 30 minutes. There are lots of different ways to charge your EV, which you can read more about in our guide to charging on the go.
Where can I charge my EV?
When it comes to charging your EV, you can do so at home or work if your workplace provides onsite charging. You’ll also have access to the UK’s ever-expanding network of public charging points on the go. From motorway service stations to cafes, restaurants, shopping centres and more – you’ll never be short of power.
How long do EV batteries last?
When properly maintained, electric car batteries are expected to last up to 10 years. That’s about the same lifespan as a normal petrol or diesel car! They could even go on longer, though you’ll find that the capacity will decrease over time, just like when you have an older phone.
How much does it cost to maintain an EV?
With far fewer moving parts than a petrol or diesel car, maintenance costs for EVs are low. Even when it comes to servicing, you’ll enjoy lower bills with only the electric battery requiring special attention. This is because the technician will need to use specific diagnostic technology to monitor the health of the battery cells. As for charging, you can save money by scheduling your charges at home during off-peak times when energy rates are lower.
What happens to a used EV battery?
A lot of work is currently being done to make electric car batteries more recyclable. This means that at the end of their lifespan, they can be recycled into materials used for making new batteries.
Are EVs environmentally friendly?
Yes. EVs are very environmentally friendly since they produce zero CO2 or NOx emissions, unlike petrol or diesel cars.
Do EVs qualify for any tax credits or incentives?
Until 1st April 2025, EVs are exempt from road tax helping you save money. There is also funding available to help with the costs of installing home charging points if you have off-street parking. Also open to those who own a flat or live in a rented building.
How does driving an EV compare to a petrol car?
Driving an EV is different to driving a petrol or diesel car. For a start, you’ll only have an accelerator and a brake pedal – with no clutch. EVs are automatic meaning there’s no gearbox or clutch needed to change gears. This is done automatically with several controls – D for drive, P for Park, N for Neutral and R for Reverse. They’re also much quieter and smoother to drive with instant torque and no engine churning under the bonnet.
