Brodick Castle - Arran

A view of the bay at Arran, Scotland

Situated on the isle of Arran, Brodick Castle is sure to delight with its colourful gardens, woodland, and waterfalls. The baronial castle features a collection of paintings, period furniture, silverware, and porcelain. All set against a backdrop of striking mountain scenery – made even more breathtaking in the autumn.

Originally built in 1844, the seat goes back for centuries, as the former residence of the Dukes of Hamilton. For any history buffs, Brodick Castle will make a fantastic family-friendly visit. In the garden, you can wander along the Silver Garden Trail and Plant Hunters’ Walk, with ponds, waterfalls, and woodland walks awaiting you.

The Isle Be Wild adventure play area is sure to entertain the children, and the Woodland Cafe serves a range of food and refreshments. If the weather holds up, you could even enjoy a picnic on the benches outside the visitor centre.

For those with mobility issues, there is accessible parking and toilets available on-site. Wheelchair users should find easy access to the ground floor of the castle via a ramp, and a lift to the first floor. The gift shop and cafe, along with most of the grounds are suitable for wheelchairs too. Entry prices can be found on the National Trust for Scotland’s website.

Glencoe

A view of the mountain pass at Glencoe, Scotland, in autumn

For admirers of nature, the stunning views at Glencoe will not disappoint. In the autumn, the surrounding trees are set aglow with vibrant autumn colours, making for an unmissable view.

Once the home of Highlanders, the reconstructed seventeenth-century house allows you to see how they lived. While in the nearby Visitor Centre, you can view a giant 3D map of the glen and immerse yourself in history with films and exhibitions. There’s also a cafe here if you want to stop for a hot drink along the way.

As a National Nature Reserve, the glen has become known for its unique rock formations and wildlife. Rare alpine flowers and mosses can be found at the high peaks, plateaus, and cliffs, while you can spot wild mountain goats, hares, and red deer if you’re lucky.

Along with the reconstructed house, there is a mountain viewpoint and picnic area where you can sit and enjoy the views. These are both accessed via a compacted gravel path that does have a slight gradient. Elsewhere, step-free access can be used to the info hub, exhibition and cinema, toilets, shop, and cafe.

Entry is free to the site, with only parking to pay for. You can view opening times and more information to help plan your visit here.
