Are gamers better drivers?
- 48% of drivers who play video games believe that in-game driving makes them better than non-gamers.
- Formula 1 drivers use simulators to train for races, with specialised weighted steering wheel and pedals.
Hyundai conducted a poll of 1,000 drivers who play video games. The popular car manufacturer found that nearly half of the drivers found that their time behind the wheel honed real life driving skills.
Out of these 1,000 drivers, 52% reported improved reaction time and safety in real life. Another 42% said that their road awareness was better, along with 39% saying hazard perception was also boosted.
Racing simulators have become progressively more accurate and immersive in recent years. Not to mention with the help of equipment available like gaming steering wheels, pedals, seats and more. Many Formula 1 drivers, log dedicated hours in replica versions of their car’s cockpit on simulators when training for their races.
The saying is ‘practice makes perfect’. Whether that practice is in real life or in-game, the transferrable skills can have a great impact on your driving.
So, is the secret to a successful car in real life to be present in a game? Research says it helps!
"With one-third of players acknowledging that racing games have influenced their choice of car model, it’s evident that both fun and functionality need to be at the forefront of design. The technology in the IONIQ 5 N is essential for creating an exhilarating driving experience, addressing what many have felt was previously missing from EVs," says Ashley Andrew, President of Hyundai & Genesis UK.
Whether you play Forza Horizon 5 or Gran Turismo 7, your experience in-game influences you in real life. Whether by choice of car or style of driving you can be sure it’s having an impact.
