Auto Express Names Mazda MX-5 Convertible of The Year 2024
The iconic sports car continues to remain popular with UK motorists, having sold over 1.2 million units since its reveal in 1989.
The Chicago Motor Show, 1989. Back when the Mazda MX-5 was revealed – over 35 years ago. Clearly, it remains as popular as ever, as it’s been named Convertible of The Year at the Auto Express New Car Awards 2024.

Geared for power
The MX-5 range consists of eight models – four Roadster and four RF. These are available in a selection of grades including Prime-Line, Exclusive-Line, and Homura.
With the first, there’s a 132PS 1.5-litre Skyactiv-G engine, while the second comes with a choice of either a 1.5-litre or 2.0-litre 184PS Skyactiv-G engine. At the top of the range, Homura features a 2.0-litre 184PS Skyactiv-G engine.
Perhaps most impressive is that the engine line-up has not received any major changes. The 2.0-litre engines continue to offer a front strut brace, limited slip differential, and Bilstein dampers as before.
Newly added however is Asymmetric Limited Slip Differential with the 2024 MX-5. A cam mechanism on the conical clutch is set differently to limit the force for both acceleration and deceleration. This enhances stability when cornering and contributes toward more balanced handling.
Upgraded interior and technology
The interior of the Mazda MX-5 has received a few upgrades in 2024 to enhance the in-car setup. A new, larger 8.8” multimedia touchscreen and instrument panel take centre stage on the dashboard. USB-C ports are also now included to charge devices on the go.
The Homura grade offers the height of luxury with Recaro seats trimmed in leather and Alcantara. Though across the range, you can expect a clean, driver-focused cabin and comfortable driving position.
The MZ Connect system makes functionality simpler, whether navigating or streaming music. While the Jinba Ittai design philosophy ensures both driver and car are perfectly in sync with one another.
Models are also fitted with a range of driver assistance features as standard. These include Kinematic Posture Control, Hill Hold Assist, Lane Keep Assist, and much more.
Other interior features included as standard are:
- Leather steering wheel
- Centre console storage box
- Heated front seats
- Lockable rear centre box with lid
- Climate control air conditioning
Sporty on the outside, the MX-5 is bound to be noticed around town. Exterior features include 16” black metallic alloy wheels, Piano Black fashion bars, and a premium cloth soft-top roof. LED lights all around also ensure top-class vision, with dusk-sensitive headlamps.
