Hibernian Salvage Late Draw To Kick Off 2024
Hibernian left it late in the opening match of 2024 to ensure that Macklin Motors-backed side avoided going into the Scottish Premiership’s winter break on the back of three successive defeats.
After narrow losses to both St Johnstone and Hearts – and the postponement of a trip to Ross County due to a frozen pitch – the Edinburgh side were hopeful of an upturn in fortunes and grabbed the lead when Elie Youan cut in from the right wing and powered a shot past goalkeeper Liam Kelly.
Motherwell equalised before half-time when Theo Bair scored from a tight angle and the away side then hit the front after the break when Hibs failed to clear a free-kick and Bevis Mugabi nodded in from a few yards out.
Lewis Stevenson smashed a shot from the edge of the box against the crossbar as Hibs chased an equaliser and the pressure from the home side would eventually tell as Youan saw a shot deflect off Mugabi and into the net to salvage a point and end the losing run.
With the league now entering the winter break, Hibs return to action in the Scottish Cup on 20 January with a trip to Forfar.
