Late Heartache For Hibernian
Hibernian missed out on the chance to move back into the top six in the Scottish Premiership after a late goal consigned the Macklin Motors-backed side to defeat against St Johnstone.
The Hibees headed into the game at Easter Road chasing a positive result in the bid to move ahead of Dundee in the standings, with a point between the two sides in the fight for a place in the top six approaching the mid-season split.
There would be controversy in the opening half of the game when a shot from Jordan Obita took a deflection and looped into the air, with Emiliano Marcondes being challenged by St Johnstone ‘keeper Dimitar Mitov as it came down inside the box.
Calls for a penalty followed when Marcondes was felled, but the referee waved away the shouts and VAR elected not to intervene.
The breakthrough came in the second half when Adama Sidibeh raced onto a through ball before smashing a shot across David Marshall and into the net to give the visitors the lead.
Hibs were level within ten minutes however, with Myziane Maolida firing in a cross shot that Mitov could only push out into the path of Chris Cadden, who drove home the equaliser.
Mitov would then be forced into a number of saves to keep the scores level and that proved to be crucial when Tony Gallagher scored his first career goal nine minutes from time following a corner.
Despite the best efforts of the home side to recover, St Johnstone held on to take the points, and with Dundee losing to Motherwell, Hibernian remain one point shy of the top six going into the final game before the split this weekend.
That game is against Motherwell, who could yet make the top six themselves if they can win the game and Dundee fail to win either of their two games.
