New Plug-In Hybrid Mazda MX-30 Unveiled
Mazda’s all-electric MX-30 is set to gain a unique plug-in hybrid powertrain, to help bolster its appeal.
The new MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV made its world premiere at the Brussels Motor Show to a group of automotive enthusiasts. It combines a 17.8KWh battery with a 830cc petrol rotary engine, and an electric motor. This is the first time Mazda has used a rotary engine since its famous RX-8 sports coupe, which retired from the roads in 2012.
The new model will provide some reassurance to drivers who are keen to go electric, but have some concerns about range. The Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV can travel up to 53 miles in full EV mode. Yet, with the help of the generator and a 50-litre fuel tank, you can expect a total range of around 400 miles.
With full compatibility for AC and DC charging, the new model can be charged however you like. If you are on the move, rapid charging can be completed in under 30 minutes, for your convenience. Mazda claims that this latest-generation powertrain can help drivers cut their emissions by as much as 25%, compared to a similarly sized petrol or diesel model.
The MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV is available in the same deluxe specifications as the original MX-30. Choose from Prime-Line, Exclusive Line, and Makoto trims - plus, an exclusive, range-topping Edition R trim. This limited-edition option is truly exceptional, with high-grade details inside and out. Just 400 of these highly sought-after Edition R models will be made available for UK sale.
Jeremy Thomson, Managing Director, Mazda Motors UK, said: “I’m really excited about the new MX-30 R-EV joining our electrified line-up in the UK this summer. A great example of Mazda’s challenger spirit, thanks to its unique technological approach, it’s a car that’s the perfect solution for customers who want an electric car for everyday usage but the flexibility to undertake longer journeys without the reliance on charging infrastructure. With the option to choose either the pure electric MX-30 or the new R-EV version depending on their needs, our customers now have even more choice.”
“Whichever version they choose they get the same seamless electric drive experience, engaging handling and first-class cabin, which features unique materials and premium design. It’s the latest example of how Mazda’s Multi Solution Approach ensures we have cars to suit all our customer’s needs by improving environmental performance with a combination of electrification and clever internal combustion engine technologies”.
