From 1st April, road tax is changing. Currently, road tax is calculated based on the CO2 emissions of your car, meaning the higher CO2 emissions your vehicle produces, the more road tax you pay.
First the first year, you pay a First Licence Rate and another for the second and subsequent years (Standard Rate). Similar to the First Licence Rate, the Standard Rate also increases with CO2 emissions.
However, in 2015 we found out that on the 1st April 2017 this would change. The first-year rate will still be related to the CO2 emissions of your vehicle, but the rates will increase as the bands change.
Vehicles with a 'List Price' of £40,000.00 or less, the rate will be £140.
Vehicles with a 'List Price' over £40,000.00, an 'additional rate' of £310 (a total of £450) will be due from the end of the first year, for 5 years.
After the additional VED rate expires the £450 will revert to £140, or whatever the current rate is at the time.
