The new Mazda MX-5: a powerful car in a small package
Mazda's MX-5 has been a firm favourite since it's debut in 1989. The latest reincarnation of the front-engine, rear-wheel drive roadster looks set to continue this trend, with its sleek stylish looks and spacious interior.
The bodywork of the MX-5 is more muscular than previous versions, whilst remaining compact. In fact, this latest MX-5 is smaller than its predecessor, but thanks to intelligent designing by the Japanese carmaker, the interior feels just as spacious.
Alongside space saving, Mazda appear to have been working on weight reduction in the MX-5 and as a result the two-seater car darts around nimbly.
The torquey 2.0-litre engine produces 158bhp, which comfortably sees the car accelerate from 0 62mph in 8.3 seconds, and reach a top speed of 139mph. Its power is transmitted to the road via a manual, six-speed gearbox, which is both crisp and direct.
The raspy exhaust note is the cherry on the top of the new Mazda MX-5, showing that this small roadster means business.
